PROCESS WORK: CREATURE MARK
A unique animal, the Honduran white bat, was selected as reference for the creature mark with careful consideration to its natural qualities: white fur, large ears, and yellow nose-leaves. After conducting comprehensive research and curating a collection of references, several sketches were created to depict the pose and specific features of the creature mark.
add sketches photo grid
Following the sketching phase, the form of the digital creature mark was planned digitally. On top of reference photos, thin lines were utilized to highlight circles, ovals, triangles, and other geometric forms within the creature's body. The next step was to create a rough draft of the creature mark using lines, shapes, and figure-ground reversal to suggest form.
After receiving constructive criticism regarding the use of shapes, tapering lines, and intuitive reasoning, further improvements were made to the creature mark. The geometric form established in the planning phase can be reapplied to display the circular and angular shapes present in the mark.
FINAL CREATURE MARK
A final round of iterations and adjustments pivoted to focus more heavily on line weight and honoring the traits of my reference— the Honduran white bat. The entire mark's color was switched from black to white to reflect the bat's fur color. Additionally, the shape of the ears and feet were altered to create a more fluid design.
PROCESS WORK: TYPOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION
To move forward with creating the typographic composition, a short research phase was conducted in order to select a phrase with some sort of connection to my chosen creature.
"The blind bat observes the topsy-turvy world."
In addition to phrase selection, the Fibonacci grid was introduced as a foundation for the composition. Early iterations began placing elements and developing a layout primarily based on the grid. Inspiration for composition was also heavily inspired by how typography can communicate a message; take, for example, the symbolism of 'bat' being upside-down, or the broken, skewed angles of 'topsy-turvy'.
A series of experiments were conducted in order to build upon previous iterations. As seen in the previous three examples, the words 'blind' and 'world' loosely frame the creature mark. The remaining words and their depictions were developed further to complete the meaning behind the phrase and the composition's balance within the grid.
